Human "artificial" intelligence

This week I attended the AAAI - Artificial Intelligence conference in Vancouver.

I was a bit disappointed because I did not find much Artificial Intelligence, but rather a lot of Human Intelligence applied to solve specific problems with the aid of computers. I found a lot of mathematics and logic and a top down approach to task solving, but very little talk about bottom up Artificial Intelligence.

Even the speakers at the conference were not sure about what Intelligence is, how to implement it, and so on. So why call the field Artificial Intelligence at all?

I am very interested by bottom up approaches, which I heard about in 3 talks; what they had in common, was that the speakers had a background, or a least took their inspiration from biological system.

I am intrigued by stuff that does not have a codified description, yet. As a corollary, my field is not definable, otherwise I would not be interested.
